Walls of Ston
One of the longest preserved fortification systems in Europe, the medieval Walls of Ston stretch across the hills above the town of Ston on the Pelješac peninsula. Begun in 1333 by the Republic of Dubrovnik, they feature forts, towers and bastions, and a walk along the ramparts offers sweeping views over the town, salt pans and bay. A great half-day trip combined with Ston's famous oysters and salt works.
