Sveti Ilija (Pelješac)

Sveti Ilija (Pelješac)
At 961 m, Sveti Ilija is the highest peak and most famous hiking destination on the Pelješac peninsula, at its western end above Orebić. The massif stretches about 6.5 km from coast to coast. The summit panorama is extraordinary, taking in the islands of Korčula, Hvar, Brač, Vis and Mljet, the Biokovo and Orjen mountains, the Neretva delta, and on a clear northerly Bura wind even the coast of Italy. Two mountain huts serve hikers: a wooden one at 565 m and a stone one at 800 m. The peak is also known as Zmijino brdo (Snake Hill), so sturdy boots, long trousers and proper clothing are recommended for the rocky terrain and the possibility of encountering snakes. It can be climbed year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions and best visibility.
