Mljet National Park

Saltwater lake and St. Mary's Island in Mljet National Park
Mljet National Park covers the lush, forested western end of Mljet island and is one of the most beautiful natural escapes in southern Dalmatia. Its centrepiece is a pair of connected saltwater lakes – Veliko and Malo Jezero – surrounded by dense pine forest, with wonderfully clear water for swimming. In the middle of the larger lake sits the tiny St. Mary's Island, home to a 12th-century Benedictine monastery you can reach by a short boat ride included with your ticket. The park is perfect for swimming, kayaking, cycling and walking along the shaded paths around the lakes. Getting there: Mljet is reached by ferry or catamaran, typically from Dubrovnik or via an organised day trip. It makes a great full-day excursion, so plan an early start. Good to know: There is a park entrance fee (around €20–30 in season, less off-season). Bring water, swimwear, sun protection and good walking shoes, and consider renting a bike to cover more ground. Check ferry timetables in advance so you don't miss the return.
