Lokrum Island
Lokrum is a lush, forested island just a short boat ride from Dubrovnik's Old Port, making it a wonderful half-day escape from the city. The whole island is a protected nature reserve, home to shady pine and olive groves, peacocks roaming freely, and quiet coves perfect for a swim. You can explore the ruins of a Benedictine monastery, relax by the small saltwater lake known as the Dead Sea, or hike up to the old Fort Royal for sweeping views over Dubrovnik and the sea. There are no hotels or overnight stays on the island, so it stays peaceful. Boats depart regularly from the Old Port in season, and the crossing takes only about 15 minutes. Full details, ferry timetables and ticket information are on the official website.
